What happens if I am able to return to work?

If you can return to work your social security benefits will continue for a trial work period which can be nine consecutive months. This is basically means that you can go back to work and work for approximately nine months earning any kind of dollar amount and still be able to collect your Social Security disability. After that nine-month period Social Security will cease your benefits and you will just continue working.  If you stop working within that nine-month period Social Security will allow you to continue getting your benefits.

Are There Any Other Jobs You Could Do?

Even if you cannot perform the work you once did, SSA is going to bring in a witness to see if there are other jobs out there that you would be able to perform in the national economy. As you age, it becomes easier to show that there are fewer jobs available for you to perform in the national economy.
